Leeds United manager Simon Grayson is hoping to "Run With Eddie" later
this year - and is urging
the club's fans to join him.
Subject to his summer plans, the Leeds boss will be taking part in the Jane Tomlinson 10k in June, and is hoping the Elland Road faithful will follow him by signing up to support two good causes. Club legend Eddie Gray is leading a campaign which will see all fans who register to "Run With Eddie" raise money for both the Jane Tomlinson Appeal and the Leeds United Foundation. A number of Leeds fans have already signed up to take part and now the Elland Road manager has pledged his support to take part the race, which takes place on Sunday June 19.
"Providing I'm in the country I'm planning to take part in the 10k run with Eddie, although I'm sure Eddie will be miles in front of me," said Simon."I think this is a great opportunity for Leeds fans to get involved. It's for a great cause. Jane was an inspiration to a lot of people and Mike has carried on all her good work. Obviously the Leeds United Foundation will also benefit from the people who take up this challenge and that will allow for increased work within the city and the communities."It's an opportunity for people to get out there, get themselves in shape, and raise money for good causes. It doesn't involve loads of training - it's given me a goal to aim for - and it's a great opportunity. Leeds is a fantastic city, this is a fantastic occasion, and it's a fantastic cause."
The race is now in its fifth year and has raised over £2m for charities both locally and nationally since its inception.
Jane's appeal benefits a number of charities around the region while the Foundation is a charitable trust, and funds raised will be ploughed into social inclusion courses around the city. All monies raised by those who "Run With Eddie" will be split equally between the Jane Tomlinson Appeal and the Leeds United Foundation. To register to join Simon and Eddie Gray, you should visit www.regonline.activeeurope.com and where prompted enter the pin LU92FC or e-mail media@leedsunited.com for a link to the registration page. New loan signing Jake Livermore is relishing the prospect of pulling on a Leeds United shirt and playing his part in the club's promotion push.
The Tottenham youngster joined on loan until the end of the season and completed the formalities on transfer deadline day before joining his new team-mates for his first training session as a Leeds player. And with eight games still to play, Jake says he is here to help."It's what you play football for, the big games, and I want to help," said Jake."There was a few clubs interested, but Leeds is a massive club with a massive fanbase and a good set of lads and I want to do my best to help them."There's eight games left, they're all cup finals and if we can't do it automatic, there's the Play-Offs."
Jake arrives with plenty of experience in the Championship, having had loan spells with both Derby County and Ipswich Town. The 21-year-old arrives having 44 career appearances to his name."I broke my leg at 17 and was out for a year, and since then I've been on loan to a few clubs and been back and forth to Tottenham.," he explained.
"I've been recalled a few times, and this seemed like a good idea for both clubs to come here."The manager is quite close with a few coaches at Tottenham and they were keen for me to come and work him. Leeds are doing well and fighting for something which is good.
"I spoke to Aaron (Lennon), Danny Rose, and Jonathan Woodgate only had positive things to say about the place."
Jake's first day had something of a twist with the morning training session being followed by an afternoon trip to Pole Position in Leeds for a Go-Karting session."I had a good day," he said. "Training was good, we went Go-Karting in the afternoon, and although I do know a few of the lads here, it was a good way of getting to know people."

Fan-demonium hits Sainsbury’s
Over 5,000 fans descended on Sainsbury's White Rose during half-term to meet Simon Grayson and his players at an Active Kids promotion at the store.
The United manager was joined by Kasper Schmeichel, Billy Paynter, Jonny Howson, Neil Kilkenny, Alex Bruce, Davide Somma, Luciano Becchio, and Sanchez Watt at the event, and the scenes were reminiscent of Beatlemania!
The club had turned out to promote healthy eating and Sainsbury's Active Kids promotion which encourages youngsters to play sport and be healthy.
"It's unbelievable," said the United manager.
"We were asked to support Sainsbury's Active Kids campaign. We expected a few people to be here and maybe have a few pictures taken, but this just shows what the football club is all about and the passion that people show.
"Hopefully the people who went will have had some satisfaction, although given the sheer numbers it might not have been possible to please everyone."
Summer signings Alex Bruce and Billy Paynter were also stunned by the turnout from the fans at Sainsbury's.
"It's quite scary really, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it," said Alex.
"It was manic, but supporting causes is something we're used to doing and it's nice to put a smile on people’s faces.
"People came in numbers and showed their support, and as players you gain in confidence from things like this because for so many to come it shows we must be doing okay."
Billy added: "It was hectic, but it's all for a good cause. Sainsbury's are trying to get the kids eating properly and being active, and if we can help with that and they listen it'll be a success.
"Leeds have always had a massive following and to see so many there, wearing the shirt, was great."
The manager was also keen that the Sainsbury's Active Kids message was conveyed and he said: "For Sainsbury's to do any promotional work with us about children and looking after education of food is brilliant and if we can do anything to help Sainsbury's with that it great."
Alex added: "If you want to be a sportsman when you grow up you should eat correctly and if we can help the cause that's great."
Renewals flood in…
Over 10,500 Season Ticket holders have renewed for the 2011/12 campaign.
The deadline for early renewals ended last Friday and saw the highest take-up at the first renewal stage for some years.
"We've been overwhelmed with the response," United chairman Ken Bates told Yorkshire Radio.
"This season we had 13,096 Season Tickets, including the 20-year ones we are honouring after administration, and as of last Friday evening, we'd sold over 10,500 for next season. We had so many over the weekend we had over 1700 to process.
"It really is amazing and I don't know how you can describe it. It shows the strength and loyalty of our fans."
Season Ticket holders who missed the early renewal offer can still renew at a 10 per cent discount in the period March 5 to March 18. After that date, no further Season Tickets will be available for sale until further notice.
Issue 50:
An emotional Andrew Hughes bid a tearful farewell to Leeds United by describing his time at the club as the "best four years of my career."
Hughes joined Scunthorpe United on an 18-month contract in January and his departure severed one of the final links with the infamous "minus 15 season," leaving only Jonny Howson and Ben Parker still remaining from the start of that 2007/08 campaign.
He made 137 appearances for the club - his only goal came at Millwall in April 2008 - and he started 38 of the 46 league games during our promotion winning season last term
"Leeds United brought me the best, most turbulent, up and down, four years of my career," said Andrew. "Last year was the best year of my career. "My wife and I moved here, having had a lot of bad luck off the pitch trying for a child, and we came to Harrogate and a miracle through the world of doctors, we had a child. My wife has got closer to her family in Manchester and what Leeds has done for me and my wife and my daughter I can't thank the people of Leeds and the club enough. Off the pitch I never want to leave Yorkshire it means so much to us. I would love to come back one day and help the club.
"People say that clubs 'save' players and I would say that Leeds saved my career and gave me the biggest kick up the rear. It changed me. It made me appreciate playing in teams that fans expect to win all the time. That pressure of playing for a club like that is something a lot of players never get to experience.
"A lot of players go along their career happy to play mid-table football and maybe enjoy a good cup run, but to go out every week knowing you had to win and you were favourites to win, and every team you were playing against it was their big game is something that as a footballer I've never experienced."
Hughes admits he was disappointed in the first instance when time was called on his Leeds career and a deal was agreed with Scunthorpe United for him to move on. While excited about the new challenge at Glanford Park, the 33-year-old says leaving Leeds was a massive wrench.
"I'm upset, I won't lie," he said. "The training ground and the facilities…Scunthorpe are in a similar position to when I came here, near the bottom with a lot of young kids, and it's a challenge
"I'll still come to Leeds games. I like the staff there, I got on well with everyone there, and I believe Leeds will get promoted. When Reading got promoted, the players were on a par, but I believe the players at Leeds will be better. Reading had the Steve Sidwells, the Kitsons, and here you've got Jonny Howson, Rob Snodgrass, Lloyd Sam, Max Gradel…there's the experience of Andy O'Brien, Kasper Schmeichel, George McCartney. You'd be surprised how many players want to come to Leeds. "I believe the club will get promoted 100 per cent. I feel it has momentum and this club deserves it. They have the facilities, the players, and the manager. They deserve it."
And Hughesy's final message to Leeds United fans?
"My message to the Leeds fans is that this club has been the most amazing four years," he said. "It's been ups and downs and it's been emotional. My wife was upset because she knows how much it meant to me.
"To play for Leeds United after what this club has done and to win something with Leeds United...okay it was a promotion from League One, but to say I won something with Leeds United, that I set out to do at the start, and to do in front of these fans in that way is the biggest honour."
* Eddie Gray is urging all Leeds United fans to join him by taking part in the Leeds 10k run this summer. Elland Road legend and Yorkshire Radio presenter Eddie is hoping Leeds United fans will sign up to take part in this year's race to support both the Jane Tomlinson Appeal and the new Leeds United Foundation.
Eddie is a long-time supporter of the race and is delighted to be supporting the appeal once again.
"It's something I enjoy doing," said Eddie. "It's a lot of fun and it's for a great cause. A lot of people in the city will benefit and it's a great day out for everybody."
The race is now in its fifth year and has raised over £2m for charities both locally and nationally since its inception.
Mike Tomlinson said: "We've been hoping to do this for the last three or four years and there's no doubt Leeds United is the biggest part of the community.
"The club has a huge influence on the city and the region and as the club makes its way back it can only have a positive impact on the city and it's vital from our point of view to have a partnership with the club."
All fans who "Run With Eddie" will also be supporting the new Leeds United Foundation, a charitable trust which supports the club's work in the community. All funds raised by those who "Run With Eddie" will be split equally between the Jane Tomlinson Appeal and the Leeds United Foundation.
Jim McAuley is chairman of the board of trustees for the Leeds United Foundation and he said: "As a Foundation we want to encourage healthy lifestyles for all and we're hoping as many Leeds fans as possible take up the chance to Run With Eddie.
"Money raised for the Foundation will help us provide bespoke programmes within the local community and social inclusion schemes in the city."
Leeds United fans can register to "Run With Eddie" by downloading the Run with Eddie App Form. The race takes place on Sunday June 19.

"Were staying grounded"
- Jonny
13 Dec 2010
No getting carried away for in-form United...
United midfielder Jonny Howson says no one will be getting carried away by a terrific run that has thrust Simon Grayson's men into the npower Championship promotion race.
Leeds made it eight games unbeaten on Saturday after winning 3-2 at Burnley and are now in fourth, just two points off the promotion places, ahead of a big weekend clash with early pace-setters Queens Park Rangers.
"We're in a very good position," said Jonny, who scored the winning goal at Turf Moor on Saturday. "It's about working hard and taking each game as it comes.
"The way the league is there are no teams standing out and walking away. QPR were the form team and got beat by Watford on Friday so it's very interesting.
"Spirit and consistency are important. Look at Blackpool last season, they had a great spirit and consistency and are now doing okay in the Premier League. We've got a few difficult games now, starting with QPR next weekend.
"I don't think any of the lads are thinking too far ahead. If teams have done their homework they will give us a bit of respect. Last season we had great form going into Christmas and we were flying. Maybe a bit of concentration dropped and knocked the rhythm out of us.
"We've got to stay grounded and can't get carried away. We're enjoying it at the minute. It'll be a difficult task to keep this going, but hopefully we can do that."
The second half performance at Burnley on Saturday was another clear signal of intent as to the threat Grayson's side are. Trailing 2-0 at half-time, United turned the game around, and Howson sealed the points with a cracking strike before celebrating with another packed away following.
"Everyone knew it wasn't good enough in the first half, but we put that right," said Jonny. "All over the park we got closer to them, forced them into mistakes and showed more composure.
"They were all good moves for the goals. Goals are goals - it doesn't matter how they go in. Mine was a bit like the Carlisle goal (in the Play-Offs in 2008) in that I didn't hit it as well as I'd have hoped.
"It was a great feeling, and a great feeling to hear the Leeds fans celebrating. We were sat in the changing room under the Leeds fans at the end and the noise was phenomenal."
Issue 48:
Andy returns to his roots
New loan signing Andy O'Brien is hoping to make up for "lost time" after returning to the club he left 17 years ago.
The Bolton Wanderers centre-back, who was released by the club as a 14-year-old, has joined Leeds on a month's loan and brings a wealth of experience, having made almost 500 career appearances with Bradford, Newcastle, Portsmouth, and Bolton.
"I got a phone call from Owen Coyle and he said would I be interested," he said.
"I said 'yes' and now I'm here. I've not played as much football as I would have liked so I am grateful for the opportunity, both to Leeds for wanting me and to Bolton for allowing me to come here.
"Football's a cut-throat business and to get an opportunity to play at such a big club is an opportunity you have to take.
"I'd like to think it's a win-win situation for Leeds as well because I am here to be working hard for a shirt."
The Harrogate-born defender, who has commanded £4m in transfer fees during his career, has made just three appearances for Bolton this season and is keen to get a taste of regular action.
Andy says he is taking nothing for granted on arriving at Leeds, but he is joining a squad that has come under-fire from the manager for conceding too many soft goals.
"He's told me to just get on with it," said Andy.
"From my perspective I'm here for a month, and I want to do well and get a place in the team. I don't take it for granted, but I have the bit between my teeth and I want to play.
"Hopefully it may be extended, but I have to perform well and we have to get results for that to happen."
Arriving at the Thorp Arch training ground represents something of a home from home for a player who was born just down the road in Harrogate.
"I'm delighted," he said. "I have a lot of friends who are Leeds fans, and I was here when I was 14 and got released, so 17 years later I hope I get the opportunity to play.
"Paul Hart was here then and there was a very good youth team with the likes of Kewell, Woodgate, Lee Matthews, and a young lad called Andy Wrighton who I don't think came through.
"Competition was deemed too high, but it's ironic how a few years later it comes 360. Now I'm here I'm determined to make up for lost time."
That "lost time" will start at Scunthorpe on Saturday when Andy is drafted into a squad looking to arrest a run that has produced four defeats in the last five games.
"It's a hard division," he said. "I've looked at the fixtures, and the aim at the end in this division is to be in the Premier League.
"It's quite a young squad which is good because it brings a togetherness and bodes well for the future. You look at the division and within two games you can go from the Play-Offs to four or five points from relegation.
"The one beauty seems to be you get quick opportunities. If you've had a bad result by playing again a few days later."
Andy also admits he is ready for the expectation that comes with being a Leeds player, citing his perhaps under-whelming arrival at Newcastle, a club where he was to make almost 200 appearances.
"I remember at Bradford we were among the worst for goals conceded," he recalled.
"When I signed for Newcastle from there, the headline was they were signing Rivaldo. Instead I walked through the door so I know all about pressure!”

New kit deal
Leeds United are delighted to announce a new six-season kit deal with Italian sportswear brand Macron.
The new agreement will see the club's partnership with Macron continue after three successful years.
Macron were well-established on the continent across all sports when we first agreed a deal in 2008. The company's profile has risen during the course of our initial agreement and they now supply a number of English teams.
Leeds United chief executive Shaun Harvey said: "When we first agreed a deal with Macron we were viewed as their flagship across Europe and we are delighted to be able to continue that association for the next six years.
"The decision to work with Macron in preference to other international brands was easy when we learned that their long-term objectives for their brand complement our own ambitions.
"The technical specification of the products is exceptionally high and Macron are at the forefront of this area which allows our players to have the best start to every game."
Gianluca Pavanello, CEO of Macron, said: "Macron is very proud for the extension of the partnership with the club. Leeds was the first club to believe in Macron in the UK. The collaboration has allowed Macron to demonstrate skills in engaging its resource every day in order to create unique products for the team and the fans through a distinctive service.
"Macron is really looking forward to the coming seasons together."
The deal will see Macron supplying kits, training wear for the senior team, reserves team, and Academy, as well as quality product for our retail operation
Issue 47:
Simon Grayson..."The fans are our inspiration"
Simon Grayson has paid tribute to the Leeds United fanbase by hailing the club’s support as an "inspiration."
A month into the start of the new npower Championship season and Leeds are already confirmed as the best supported club in the Football League. With an average of over 25,000 from the two home leagues games so far and two sell-out away trips to Nottingham Forest and Watford, United fans seem to be enjoying life back in the second tier.
The 6,700 who went to Barnsley in September was the club’s biggest away support in the league since the trip to Wigan in February 2005 – and is likely to be the highest away following of any club in the top four divisions this season.
"Our fans are absolutely top drawer," insisted the United boss.
"We sell our full allocation wherever we go, and we get great crowds at home.
"When you have support like we have it acts as an inspiration for everyone to do well.
"It's an expensive business watching football in this day and age and we appreciate the lengths our fans go to.
"We want to give them something to shout about, and hopefully they have been pleased with our start to the season."
Three more join up
Simon Grayson added three more new signings before the transfer window closed in August.
Striker Ross McCormack from Cardiff City was the highest profile transfer with the Scotsman making his debut as a late substitute at Watford, less than 24 hours after completing his move north for an undisclosed fee.
Attack-minded Honduran international Ramon Nunez also joined the club after impressing while on trial, and loan midfielder Adam Clayton joined on a permanent deal from Manchester City. Grayson also added another new face after the transfer window closed with former Premier League midfielder Amdy Faye signing a short-term contract. The Senegal international has signed until January.
Centenary Pavilion to open its doors
The new Centenary Pavilion is set to open its doors at Elland Road this month. Leeds United already boasts some of the best conference and banqueting facilities in the city but the improvements will increase the size and allow the club greater scope in hosting bigger events than in the past. United chairman Ken Bates said: "It's very exciting and people will be able to see that when it re-opens in September."Some people ask why are we spending on that and ask where the money comes from. Well, the money comes from income which we generate outside football and the pavilion is a very important part of that.
"It has been such a successful operation we have had to turn people away all the time, clients away all the time and events away because we were not big enough."With 1,450 seats and split into two 700 suites we will then be able to offer every kind of facility, every kind of function. It will be the biggest in Leeds, probably the biggest in Yorkshire, probably the biggest between Newcastle and Manchester.”
East Upper open for Blades clash
The East Stand Upper will open for the first time this season for the visit from Sheffield United later this month.
Due to the anticipated demand for the first home Yorkshire derby of the season, the East Upper will be open, priced at £34 adults, £27 senior citizen (60 plus), and £24 juniors (under-16s).
Tickets for this game are now on general sale via the usual channels or you can book online.
Issue 46:
Sanchez Watt... "It feels good to be back"
Premier League loan signing Sanchez Watt is aiming to establish himself at Leeds United by taking the next steps of his career development at Elland Road.
The highly-rated 19-year-old has returned from Arsenal for a second loan spell, and he will remain at Leeds for the duration of our Championship campaign.
He made six appearances at the end of last season as United clinched promotion and is looking to pick up where he left off.
"It feels good to be back," said Watt. "Everyone is happy to see me and hopefully I can do the business. I had a little run near the end of last season and proved myself to the manager and the fans.
"The formation is similar to Arsenal and I'm going to here to give my all." Sanchez was a late arrival to the camp last season, joining towards the end of a campaign that was threatening not to turn out quite as everyone had hoped.
The youngster made his debut in the 3-0 home defeat against Swindon Town and impressed on his only start when MK Dons were beaten at Elland Road.
"We stuck together and came through well in the end," he said. "When a lot of fans come along the support gives you more of a drive. From January everyone thought Leeds were going to get promoted early, but we lost games we could have won, and it all came down to the last match.
"It was a great feeling because it's something I've got in my locker in terms of big games and pressure games. My confidence is good because my season ended on a high because we were celebrating a good achievement."
Naturally the move to Elland Road is seen as a step in the development of Sanchez as a player. Having featured in the senior side at Arsenal, he is highly-rated by the Gunners and the opportunity to play in the Championship will see the youngster gain more valuable experience.
"As I've said the formation is similar to Arsenal here and I'll probably play on the wing as I would at Arsenal," he explained.
"If I do the work here people will take notice. Leeds is a big club and if you do well here it goes around quick.
"People are talking about how well Leeds could do and I want to help the club go up again.
"Arsenal know I want to prove myself and I enjoyed myself here."
Lee Thompson from East Ardsley joined Simon Grayson and his squad at the official photocall at Elland Road on Sunday for his picture taking with the full squad.
Lee was the lucky winner at our annual Open Day after he guessed nearest to the figure of the total attendance for our seven home cup matches last season.
He was one of five potential winners selected from the North Stand as the players took part in the photo-call and a copy of the photograph is now his for keeps.
Around 3,000 fans attended during the course of the day with the two player signing sessions again proving popular.
After the photo-call, the United manager hosted a series of games on the pitch, including a quickest goal competition and a blindfolded penalty shoot-out.
Mini-tours of the stadium were also held throughout the day with fans getting a glimpse of the tunnel, the home changing room, and the LUTVstudios.
Outside, there was plenty of entertainment in the shape of a fun-fair, face-painting and games with Football In The Community.
Leeds United announced two new major sponsorship deals during August – giving the club a huge boost ahead of the new season.
Hesco Bastion have agreed a five-year deal to sponsor the East Stand while Neil Hudgell Law, which has just opened new offices in Leeds, are the new South Stand sponsors at Elland Road.
Issue 45:
The excitement builds for the new season
Leeds United will begin life in the npower Championship with an Elland Road clash against Derby County on Saturday August 7 – and manager Simon Grayson can’t wait.
The Rams roll into Elland Road to kick-off a season which the Leeds boss can’t wait to get underway.
“I think everyone wants to start at home”, said Grayson. “There will be a good crowd and it’s a nice start for us against a team who will be looking to do well. It’s obviously a nice one for Paul Connolly who joined us from Derby last week, but the fixture list always seems to throw something like that up.
“As a whole, the first month is interesting, and September looks particularly exciting with a run of three derby games.”
United’s first away trip comes the following weekend at Nottingham Forest on Saturday August 14 before games against Millwall at Elland Road (Saturday August 21) and Watford (Saturday August 28) conclude the first month.
The first derby trip of the season comes on Tuesday September 14 at Barnsley and Leeds are back in South Yorkshire four days later for the trip to Doncaster Rovers (Saturday September 18).
Sheffield United’s visit to Elland Road on Saturday September 25 completes a run of three straight all-Yorkshire games.
“Last year was predominantly a southern-based division and we were on the road a lot with no real derbies”, said Grayson.
“This year there are a lot of teams in the Yorkshire area, there’s Burnley and Preston, and there’s a few in the Midlands so there’s plenty to look forward to.
“Three within 11 days in September is something to look forward to. We’ll be playing teams from this area and it can only add spice, not only to the area, but also to the league.”
United’s next local clash is at Middlesbrough on Saturday October 16 and Cardiff City make their first visit to Elland Road for four years on Saturday October 23.
Hull City are the visitors on Tuesday November 9 and before Christmas Leeds also face a first league meeting with Bristol City for 30 years on Saturday November 13; a trip to Reading (Saturday November 27); and a trip to Turf Moor to face Burnley on Saturday December 11.
On Boxing Day, Leeds head for Leicester City, before facing successive home games against Portsmouth (Tuesday December 28) and Middlesbrough (New Years Day). The club’s first away trip of 2011 is at Cardiff City on Monday January 3 and we head to Portsmouth on Saturday January 22.
The trip to Hull City is scheduled for Tuesday February 1 while other Yorkshire dates see Barnsley at Elland Road on Tuesday February 22, Doncaster come to Leeds on Saturday March 5, and United head for Sheffield United on Saturday March 19.
The final run-in sees three London away trips come together with Millwall (Saturday April 9), Crystal Palace (Monday April 25), and the last game of the season is at QPR on Sunday May 8. United’s final home game is against Burnley on Saturday April 30.
Issue 44:
“We Are Goin’ Up!”
Leeds United are back in the Championship after ending a three-year exile.
The club beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 at Elland Road on the final day of the season to secure a long-awaited return to football’s second tier.
The victory was greeted with wild celebrations at Elland Road as 1000s of fans celebrated with the players and management.
“This means so much to everybody connected with this club,” said delighted manager Simon Grayson.
“The staff, the players, and the people behind the scenes have all worked so hard to achieve this.
“Winning any promotion is a great achievement, but to do it as manager of the club I supported and the club where I started my career is something else.
“It really is a great achievement and everyone should be so proud.”
In keeping with the nature of United’s season, it was a far from straightforward afternoon.
Max Gradel was red carded in the first half and when Bristol Rovers went 1-0 up in the game, Charlton Athletic, who were winning at Oldham, were suddenly propelled into the promotion spot.
But substitute Jonny Howson levelled the scores before Jermaine Beckford secured the win - and promotion - with a second goal moments later.
“We don’t seem to do things the easy way here, but I always had a confidence and belief in the players,” said the boss.
“Okay, we left it to the last day, had 10 men, and came from a goal behind, but the players have showed the desire, not only on Saturday, but on other days as well.
“The crowd made up for the loss of Max and the atmosphere was incredible. I think we’ve all been through every emotion possible these past nine months.
“It was all about getting the team, the club, and the city promoted, and we’re back in a league we deserve to be in.”
Skipper Leads the
way for Leeds
Skipper Richard Naylor was quick to speak of his pride after Leeds United secured promotion back to the Championship.
The Leeds-born defender has led the club since returning to his home city in January 2009 from Ipswich, and the promotion success was the culmination of an important mission for Naylor.
“I’m very proud at what we’ve done,”
he said.
“We’ve done it the hard way - I said after the Charlton game, that we never seem to make things easy at this club - and it’s been a long hard season, but we got there, and that’s the most important thing.
“Things didn’t go our way again on Saturday in the first half, but Jonny scored a great goal which changed the game and we went on from there.
“The scenes at the end were great. It’s what we’ve worked for all season and I was very proud and pleased for everyone.
“We enjoyed Saturday night and we’ll start looking ahead to the Championship.
“Leicester have shown what’s possible when you come up from League One, and if we can keep pushing on who knows what we can achieve.
“We also have a good nucleus of Leeds lads in the team which can be important at times.”

GRAYSON’S MEN IN POLE POSITION
LEEDS UNITED head towards the festive period with a tight grip on the League One promotion race.
After 18 games, Simon Grayson’s side were six points clear at the top of the division and were a whopping 10 points clear in the promotion places.
The 1-0 defeat of Leyton Orient at Elland Road at the end of November saw the unbeaten home record stretch to 20 matches and, as the New Year beckons, Grayson’s men are established as the firm favourites to book a Championship return.
But the manager is determined to keep his feet and the feet of his players firmly on the ground.
“We’ve had a great start to the season and we’re in a great position,” he said. “There’s a lot of other clubs who would love to be in the position we’re in – but there’s still a long way to go. Promotions aren’t won in November and December, they are won in May and it’s where we are then that counts.
“What we’ve done is given ourselves a platform with the start we’ve had. We’ve shown a good level of consistency and we keep raising the standards higher and higher. I thought we were terrific when we won 4-0 at Bristol Rovers, but then we went to Brighton and turned in what I felt was our best performance of the season.
“It’s all about keeping it going. We have the players here who have a real belief in what they are doing. There’s no complacency among them and if they see other players slacking they tell them. That’s how it should be.”
MAX IS MAD FOR IT AT LEEDS
Leeds United loan man Max Gradel was delighted to secure his short-term future with the club, following an extension to his loan move.
The 22 year old, who joined from Leicester City for an initial month, had his stay extended until January 2 after impressing both the manager and the Elland Road fans.
Gradel struck the winning goal against Orient in November and walked away from Elland Road with his second Man of the Match award of the month.
“I’m very happy to be back here,” said Max, “Leeds asked Leicester, and Leicester didn’t say no, so I’m really happy. Leicester thought it was best for me, and best for me to keep playing first team football.
“I haven’t spoken with the Leicester manager, but I hope to speak to him in January to see what options are available to me. I don’t know what will happen, but I want to play first team football and we’ll talk about it in January, and see what the best thing is.
“It’s Leicester’s decision and we’ll see, but I need to do what’s best for me at the moment.”
The player has settled in quickly with United.
“The manager, the staff, and the players have helped me settle down quickly and I’m enjoying it here,” he added. “I need to get more confidence and get my fitness levels high, and I’m looking to keep on going now.
“We have a lot of games coming up that we have to be ready for, and I’m looking forward to things.”

Leeds United made a surprise appearance at Adel Primary School.
Leeds United manager Simon Grayson, his first team squad, and World Cup winner Norman Hunter made a surprise appearance at Adel Primary School in last month to spread the word about the City Region’s bid to be a host city at the 2018 World Cup, should England be successful.
They were there to celebrate the launch of a DVD produced by Leeds United, in association with Leeds City Council, aimed at promoting the Back The Bid Leeds campaign in schools.
The DVD is being distributed to over 300 schools in the area and Adel was the launch venue. The players and management even arrived on a specially branded Back The Bid bus.
After watching the DVD with the pupils, the players signed autographs and chatted the children, and the manager said it was an enjoyable afternoon.
“It’s been good,” said Grayson. “It’s something worthwhile and backing the bid is important to the city and the club. Coming to a school is good because the players realise the children contribute to their wages and support them, and it’s good for the kids to meet their heroes.
“It’s important to get involved with the community like this.”
Former Leeds school pupil Jonny Howson proved a popular attraction for the kids and he said the players enjoyed the experience.
“It’s good to come back to the schools and it’s nice for the kids,” he said. “I know what it’s like being a young lad getting autographs and I always make time for that. All the lads did and it was enjoyable meeting the kids.
“The most important thing is getting the votes for the bid. It would give the city a massive lift if we could bring the World Cup here. It’s a big sporting city and for the World Cup to come would top it off.”
Adel headteacher Stephen Boothroyd said the visit had created a real buzz around school during the week.
“There was a buzz all week from the pupils and the staff,” he said. “They’ve been talking about it all week, and the players went and sat with them on the floor during assembly which was great.
“We feel privileged that they visited us - and Norman Hunter as well who has been a great ambassador - and we were honoured to be a part of it.
“We would like Leeds as a host city to host World Cup games Being from the city myself I think it would be great for the city and would give us a buzz.”

UNITED LEAD THE WAY
Leeds United ended the month of October by blazing a trail at the top of League One.
A 12-game unbeaten league start came to an end when United were felled by old rivals Millwall on October 24 - but Simon Grayson’s men responded by thrashing Bristol Rovers 4-0 on their own patch just three days later.
The 4-0 success was United’s most comprehensive away league win for over six years, and the club’s promotion campaign is gathering in strength as each week passes by.
“It’s been a great start,” said manager Simon Grayson. “I’m sure most other teams in the league would have taken the start we’ve had, but now we have to build on that.
“We came back from our first defeat with a terrific performance at Bristol Rovers and we raised the bar even higher with the standards we showed.
“Promotions aren’t won in October, they are won in May and it’s where you are then that counts. We’ve given ourselves the start, now we have to continue.”
Jermaine Beckford, who became the first Leeds
player to bag 30 goals in a season for almost 40 years last term, has again started in fine form and after scoring a last-minute winner against Norwich at Elland Road he scored his ninth and 10th goals of the season at Bristol Rovers.
“Jermaine is a quality striker,” added Grayson. “You only have to look at his goal against Norwich in the last-minute. Other players had turned their backs, but he was there, waiting, and he was rewarded for keeping going right to the last.”
TICKETS are now on sale to Members for the home game against Huddersfield Town on December 5 (12.15pm).
The East Stand Upper will be opened priced at Adults £26, Senior Citizens £16 and Juniors £12 (equivalent to North Stand prices for the Category A game).
Tickets are currently only available to Members online, but tickets are available from Monday via all usual sales channels until Saturday November 14.
Tickets will go on general sale from Monday November 16.
Fans are advised to book early for the game. Full details are available on www.leedsunited.com.

Leeds United manager Simon Grayson hailed his record-breaking players after a terrific start to the new season.
The 2-0 win against Stockport County at the start of September saw the class of 2009 etch their name into the Leeds United history books.
The 2-0 success was United’s 14th straight league win home soil - bettering the 13 set by Don Revie’s side in 1969 - and it was the eighth straight victory to the start the season in all competitions, bettering the seven straight wins at the start of the 1973 season.
“The players can be proud of themselves,” he said. “To break the records they have is terrific, and they deserve full credit for what they have done. There’s been some great players and managers at this club and to put their names in the record books is something they should all be very proud of. This club is steeped in history and tradition and they have created a record which we hope we expand upon.
“In terms of our season, we haven’t achieved anything and no one here thinks we have, but to win eight straight games to start the season - six of them in the league - and to win 14 on the bounce at home in the league is a fantastic achievement for everyone concerned.”
First half goals from Mike Grella, his first for the club, and Lubo Michalik with his first in over two years, proved enough to see off a spirited Stockport side in front of almost 23,000 at Elland Road.
“I wouldn’t say it was a great performance, but it was a victory and that’s what counts,” said the manager. “Sometimes you don’t play as well as you can, but you have to win games, and that’s what we did.
“We were comfortable enough without really imposing ourselves, but it was another win. You have to give Stockport credit and our players have had a heavy schedule, but we’ve set high standards and we know we can do better.”
SIMON GRAYSON allowed his players “a couple of minutes of excitement” after being paired with Liverpool in the Carling Cup before bringing them back down to earth.
United will entertain the Premier League side in the third round of the Carling Cup during the week commencing September 21.
It is the biggest cup draw the club has had since suffering relegation from the Premier League at the end of the 2003/04 season.
The United management and players learnt of the draw as they were preparing for the weekend clash at Colchester United.
“We found out the draw at the hotel and we let them have a couple of minutes of excitement,” said the manager. “It is a fantastic draw for the club. There’ll be a full house and it should be a great evening for everyone.
“But we stressed to the players it’s the last I want to hear of it for a few weeks now. We have too many big games before Liverpool and ultimately that’s why we are here.”
THE City of Leeds region welcomed a delegation from the FA’s England World Cup 2018 committee in early September, as the city continues its bid to become a host for the competition.
Leeds United and Scotland legends Peter Lorimer and Eddie Gray were on hand to welcome the delegation, along with representatives from the City Council and partners.
Representatives from England 2018 visited Leeds to see for themselves why it should be a host city for the games. After a presentation at Leeds City Museum about Leeds as a potential host city, they split into three groups to visit venues specific training sites, FIFA fan fest (festival) sites and City Centre hotels, accompanied by relevant council officers and representatives of Leeds.
Shaun Harvey, chief executive of Leeds United said: “We’ve been working hard over the past few months and we are looking forward to welcoming the England 2018 delegation. There will be plenty going on around the city on Monday and we hope as many people as possible will show their support for our bid.”
Councillor Richard Brett, leader of Leeds City Council said: “The Leeds City Region is doing everything possible to ensure Leeds becomes a host city for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The prospect of hosting World Cup matches is an exciting one. It will bring huge benefits to the city and surrounding area and ensure that all that is great about Leeds and Yorkshire is shown to audiences around the world.
“I am confident that the England 2018 delegation will be impressed during their visit and will return to London convinced that Leeds would make a great host city.”

BACK THE BID LEEDS
The Leeds City Region has officially launched its bid to become a World Cup host city.
The City Region is bidding to become a host city for either the 2018 World Cup or the 2022 World Cup should England be awarded host nation status.
And a number of official Leeds World Cup Ambassadors joined Council leaders, city dignitaries, and representatives of Leeds United at the launch in Millennium Square.
The Ambassadors are former Leeds United players who have represented their respective countries in World Cups dating back to 1966.
Norman Hunter (1966 - England), Peter Lorimer (1974 - Scotland), Gordon McQueen (1978 - Scotland), Nigel Martyn (2002 - England), and Rui Marques (2006 - Angola) all attended the launch and spoke passionately about why they would like to see the World Cup come to this part of Yorkshire.
Allan Clarke (1970 - England), Jack Charlton (1966/1990 - England/Rep of Ireland) and Eddie Lewis (2006 - USA) have also agreed to act as a official Ambassadors and have thrown their weight behind the campaign. Elland Road boss Simon Grayson was also at the launch, along with council leader Richard Brett, deputy council leader Andrew Carter, and Leeds United CEO Shaun Harvey.
Shaun Harvey said: “We’re delighted to be associated with the bid and we’re all working closely together in the hope that we can bring the World Cup to the City Region.
“I’d like to say a special thanks to the Ambassadors who have pledged their support. The club has a great history with the World Cup and we have an association going back to 1966 which is a big part of our history.
“The West Riding County FA are also supporting the bid. While the World Cup is seen as the pinnacle, it is vital that we have the support of the masses, and we would encourage everyone to support the bid.” The United manager said: “It would be terrific if the World Cup came to Leeds. Everyone knows it’s a great sporting city and wherever you travel people associate Leeds with Leeds United.
“Attracting the World Cup to the region would obviously be a big boost to the city in terms of showing people what we have to offer here.
“2018 may seem a long way off, but a lot of people are working very hard on this, and hopefully if England is successful in its bid, we will see the World Cup coming to Yorkshire in all its glory.”

READY TO GO AGAIN…
LEEDS UNITED’S new League One campaign gets underway on Saturday 8th August with a visit from Exeter City.
United manager Simon Grayson had made three new signings before the end of July with Australian international Patrick Kisnorbo, Jason Crowe, and Shane Higgs all joining the club in readiness for the new campaign.
United visited Ireland once again during pre-season before games against Blackburn, Newcastle, and Burnley.
“Pre-season is all about getting ready for that opening game,” said United manager Simon Grayson. “Results don’t matter. It’s about fitness, working hard, developing partnerships
and building team shape.”
The boss said he was pleased with a number of his squad’s early performances, and was delighted to see his strike pairing of Jermaine Beckford and Luciano Becchio hit the back of the net during the pre-season games.
“You always want to see your strikers scoring goals and they’ve done well,” he said. “Our performances have been good, we’ve passed it well and created chances for periods in games, and we’ve prepared well.”
NEW SEASON, NEW KIT…
Leeds United will kick off the new campaign with a new home kit and a new away kit. The home kit was launched at the final league game of last season, against Northampton, and the yellow away shirt was worn for the first time in the pre-season friendly against Blackburn Rovers at Elland Road.

Leeds United boss praises the fans after defeat at Elland Road
No sooner had the final whistle sounded the end of Leeds United’s unsuccessful League One campaign, than Elland Road chairman Ken Bates ushered in the 2009/2010 season.
Leeds United suffered Play-Off semi-final heartbreak at the hands of Millwall, losing 2-1 on aggregate to the London club, but Bates and manager Simon Grayson were quick to turn their attentions to the forthcoming campaign.
“Simon (Grayson) came in to see me afterwards and we went through every player on the books and what we want to do,” the Leeds chairman said. “I had a staff meeting first thing on Friday morning and I told them: ‘Last night has gone. We’re now planning for promotion next season, and that planning starts now. This is the first day of our title-winning season.’
“We had a traumatic season because for the second one in succession we had a change of manager which is always unsettling. But next season we start properly. We have a good manager, a good playing staff which will be strengthened and great fans. We’re very lucky here. We have a passionate fan base, we have big plans for the club, and we’ve had a set-back. We are a year behind schedule, but we’ll put that right next season.”
The manager was also looking ahead in positive and insists that his players should use their near-miss as inspiration next term.
“In the end, we came up short against Millwall over two games but it wasn’t through lack of effort,” said Grayson. “It was a very quiet dressing room afterwards, but we have to use it as motivation. Some of them have been through it, but they’ll all stick together.
“We don’t deserve to be in this league, but we are. Look at our fans. They were outstanding, and the reception at the end of the Millwall game meant so much.
“We’ve fallen short, but we’ll be back. We’d love to be in the Championship, but we’re not and we’ll properly and we set our sights higher for next season.” The manager has already drawn up his plans for the 2009/2010 season and his message to the players immediately after the final whistle was that automatic promotion will be the aim next term.
“We have to start positively and make sure we get promoted,” he said. “It was difficult to take immediately afterwards, but we’ll use it as an inspiration to straight up. We’ll use the Millwall experience to be better and stronger and come back and win automatic promotion, never mind the Play-Offs. I’m extremely proud of the players and the staff, and what they’ve done over the past few months. When we came in December anything could have happened. We could have dwindled away, but we galvanised them and we’ve lost two in 17. If you have a run like that at this stage and you don’t get promoted you are probably very unlucky, but credit to them.”
Both manager and chairman were also quick to praise the support of the Leeds. Over 37,000 turned out for the Play-Off semi-final – the highest Football League crowd of the season – and Leeds were afforded a standing ovation in defeat against Millwall.
“The support was unbelievable yet again and I can’t thank them enough,” Grayson said. “The reception at the end meant a lot. Since the day I walked through the door in December the fans have been with us every step of the way. I think the fans appreciate what we’ve done as a group, and that’s how we will do it next year by all sticking together as a group.
The fans knew we’d had a go at it. The fans have been outstanding both at Elland Road and away, and I’m more disappointed that we couldn’t reward them, but we’ll all come back stronger.”
The United chairman was also quick to praise what he described as “the best fans I’ve ever seen. “I have nothing but praise for the fans,” he added. “The players were given a standing ovation and to hear them chanting ‘There’s only one Simon Grayson’ was very encouraging as well. I have to say these fans are the best I’ve ever seen in football. They’ve had nothing to celebrate, but they’ve been fantastic.”
